The last big-budget movies that included a significant portion of IMAX 70mm footage, approximately 70 minutes of it, was Interstellar. Superman, have only been shot partially in 70mm, often using 35mm film or a super high-end digital camera like the Red Epic. Most Hollywood films using IMAX cameras, such as Batman v. Unfortunately, due to the size of the cameras, cost, and difficulty of post-production when compared to digital formats, 70mm/15p filmed IMAX production is rare, and so are screens around the country capable of projecting it. ![]() IMAX film is a large format with nearly unmatched clarity and quality of images, boasting even greater detail than 4K. If you’re going to a movie shot in true IMAX - that means it was shot, at least in part, using IMAX cameras, on 70mm film, and is being projected on a full-size IMAX screen (97 feet wide by 76 feet high) - pay the extra cost if you have the money to spend. Let’s backtrack a bit here and put those questions aside for a moment. Do you hit the regular showing, or see it in 3D? And will you be watching in standard RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, AMC Prime or Cinemark XD? In fact, there might be too many options. Fortunately, there are plenty of options for seeing those summer blockbusters. ![]() I personally take a holistic approach to my moviegoing and consider the soundscape as important as the imagery, but for most people, a poorly projected screening is a dealbreaker. RealD 3D, IMAX Experience, Cinemark XD, D-Box seats - they’re all battling for your box office and concession dollars, but are these innovations really worth the extra dough?Īs much as tickets and food cost these days, it really is all about the overall experience. To counter the downturn, the film industry has worked hard to come up with innovations that might get more people in those stadium seats, trying everything from IMAX screens to dine-in theaters, recliners, rumble seats, and, of course, then there’s 3D. But just as ticket and concessions prices have gone up, consumer technology has also improved, allowing more people to afford relatively large screen TVs for home use and sapping ticket sales in the process. We’d go to the Cinerama Dome with its massive curved 86-foot screen, or another behemoth of its day, Grauman’s Chinese Theater, then we’d go out for dinner and ice cream. My dad loved going to the movies and he made a “thing” of it - I still remember standing in line for about two hours to see Raiders of the Lost Ark. I'll still probably watch it again since I did really enjoy it though. When I was a kid, hitting the theater for a summer blockbuster was a big family event. I then did more searching and saw there's a Fridley IMAX theater coming to Waukee but they're putting the finishing touches on construction and it opens in like three weeks. Starting tomorrow it's back to standard and Halloween is their XD/D-BOX showing of the week. Today (thursday) is the last day it's showing in D-BOX and XD at that Cinemark. ![]() Thanks for any feedback y'all feel like giving! And yeah, sorry if I'm out of line, but hey at least I'm not bitching about how much MoviePass sucks these days, right?Įdit - Thanks for all the replies! I made a grave mistake in checking the area for First Man showings - I let it default to today's date. So I'm wondering for people familiar with both technologies, what would you recommend? Is the screen in the D-BOX theater also XD? In that case no further discussion is necessary, my problem is solved, but it seems like I have to choose one or the other. However, the extra dynamic range, brightness, screen size, and sharpness of XD would certainly look amazing, especially for the IMAX portion (not the real thing, but better than my local theater for sure). I think it could actually add to the experience and not be a gimmick. I've never been to a D-BOX movie before, but if there's ever a use-case for it, it seems like this would be it, with the launches, the shaky rattly spacecraft, etc. There's a Cinemark near where I'll be staying that appears to be offering First Man in both D-BOX and in XD. I'm going to be taking a trip to Des Moines this weekend and actually want to see it again. I saw First Man at my local theater using MoviePass and loved it. I'm just worried my similar post in /r/movies won't get any traction. This is not strictly MoviePass related, so mods feel free to delete this if you think I'm out of bounds.
